Paddle Mixer / Paddle Blender

A paddle mixer (or paddle blender) is an impeller driven mixer, as is the ribbon blender. Similar to the ribbon blender, it generally has a U-shaped horizontal trough, with the impeller shaft running the length of the trough and a paddle or plow blade attached. The speed of the paddle blender can be increased by mounting one to three chopping blades on the trough’s lower section. These must be designed so as not to interfere with the paddle blade. The blades of the paddle mixer generally operate at a faster speed than the blades of a ribbon blender/ mixer and can therefore offer very short mixing times. A paddle mixer is good when blending materials of dissimilar size, shape and density and can be used for either batch or continuous processes. In addition, they can be used for low-shear mixing applications such as blending friable or over-sized materials.
