Conical mixers / screw mixers are a category of mixers that use a rotating screw that moves around the periphery of a vertical conical hopper. The screw lifts solids from the bottom of the hopper to the top, where the mixture flows by gravity back into the screw. They are sometimes known as vertical mixers or vertical blenders. They are a good choice for applications that require gentle blending for friable materials and when plant floor space is tight as they have a small footprint. Additional advantages of the conical mixer over a ribbon blender are: 1) they offer complete discharge through the lower cone 2) they consume less power 3) they offer the flexibility to operate with small batches, as small as 10% of blender capacity and 4) they are easy to clean.
