Screw feeders (or auger feeders) use a screw or auger to dose dry raw ingredients into the food manufacturing process. With exchangeable screw design choices, screw feeders can handle a wide range of food ingredients—from flour to cherries. The selection of screw feeder design is dictated by the material to be fed. Single screw feeders handle free flowing materials, ranging from semolina to chocolate chips. Twin screw feeders handle more difficult materials such as powders, flour, baking soda, that can be sticky, bridge or flood. Screw feeders can be applied in many phases of food production: batching minor ingredients, feeding multiple ingredients in a continuous process, applying seasoning to a finished snack product. They can be applied as either volumetric feeders or as gravimetric loss-in-weight feeders, where the screw feeder would be mounted on a scale or loads cells.
