Gravity conveyors literally use gravity, rather than a power source, to do the work of transporting packages or other objects. A gravity conveyor can be a roller, skate wheel or expanding type. The frame can be inclined slightly for gravity flow, but objects and packages may also be rolled along manually. Roller conveyors consist of a series of parallel rollers fastened to a metal frame supported at intervals. Gravity skatewheel conveyors are similar but consist of skate wheels instead of rollers and are usually used for lighter loads.
Gravity conveyors can be used in a food manufacturing facility to transport products or work in process from one work area to another—often in shipping and receiving. Heavy duty gravity roller conveyors can handle over 2,500 lbs. per roller. Light weight versions are also available with small rollers to transport small packages or objects.
